Help Us Help Brody!!

BrodyMarch 16, 2009

Brody is a year and a half old black lab mix rescued from a shelter in Kersey, CO. Even though this organization had Brody in their care for over three months, they either did not notice or did not care that Brody had a very obvious injury to his left rear leg. Black Dog Animal Rescue offered to take Brody into our care after the other organization was unable to place hi into an adoptive home after several months. It was not until Brody was on the transport to us that we were told he had some kind of injury causing him to limp and favor the leg. We were lead to believe this problem had just started that day.

Unfortunately, we noticed immediately when he got here that Brody was favoring the leg and that his injury appeared to be higher up in the hip area. Further investigation showed substantial atrophy of the leg muscles, indicating that he had been favoring the leg for some time. We immediately took him to Cheyenne Pet Clinic where they had to sedate him for x-rays because he was in such pain. The radiographs revealed that Brody’s left hip is substantially deteriorated and damaged beyond repair. The bones at the end of his femur and in the pelvis surrounding the joint have lost quite a bit of their density. The vet explained that it was likely this was the result of untreated trauma to the joint, such as being hit by a car.

Brody now requires orthopedic surgery to remove the head of the femur and prevent further damage to the bone. This should relive his pain and allow him to begin normal use of the leg. He is being maintained on pain relievers until the Spring when we hope to do the operation and begin physical therapy. Black Dog Animal Rescue is very small and we do not have the resources that some larger organizations do. That said, we don’t normally take in special needs animals as we do not have the funds to care for them. The estimated cost of Brody’s operation is $1200.00. Nevertheless, once we accept an animal, we are as committed to them as though they were our own personal pets. We are trying to raise funds to help pay for Brody’s surgery.

An on-line fundraiser has been established for those wishing to donate to the cause. Please follow this link to contribute: http://www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2009-03-14.0607174137/groupaction_view

Brody is a sweet, affectionate, and energetic boy. He cannot currently be placed for adoption, but we will accept applications for him. Please know that he cannot go to a new home until after his surgery and that we will require your commitment to his physical therapy if you wish to adopt soon after the operation. Thank you!!
